Shazam, originally known as Captain Marvel, is a superhero appearing in DC Comics. Created by writer Bill Parker and artist C. C. Beck, the character first appeared in *Whiz Comics #2* (February 1940), published by Fawcett Comics.

The character is typically portrayed as Billy Batson, a young boy who, by speaking the magic word "Shazam!", can transform into a powerful adult superhero. The word is an acronym derived from the names of six immortal elders who grant Billy his powers: Solomon (wisdom), Hercules (strength), Atlas (stamina), Zeus (power), Achilles (courage), and Mercury (speed).

Due to trademark issues with Marvel Comics' character of the same name, DC officially renamed Captain Marvel to Shazam! when they acquired the rights to the character. Shazam! retains the classic elements of a child transforming into a hero with godlike powers.
